New Server Project

New Server Project

Things have been quiet for me when it comes to modding since my last build, Project: Steampunk’d TJ11. I’ve decided to now turn my attention to my servers. Currently I run a Window 7 box as my File Server, and a FreeNAS box as my local network backup. For this project, I will be using server grade hardware and will be focusing on functionality and reliability and not the “coolness” factor that modding brings. There will be 3 total builds, 2x FreeNAS and 1x Pfsense build.

Currently I am using a Raidmax Seiran to house my FreeNAS server. It has space for 12 HDD but is only using 6x 2TB WD Reds in RAIDZ1.

I am using a CaseLabs M8 case as my Windows 7 File Server which I call OrangeCrush. It was a fun, not very serious, server build that is way over the top powered and fully watercooled. It has 8x 3TB WD SE drives. 5x in RAID5 for general storage and 2x in RAID1 for pictures.

As I previously said, this new project will be focused on functionality and reliability. FreeNAS #1 will host all my original data and play host to multiple plugins like Plex. FreeNAS#2 will be my onsite network backup and the Pfsense box will help protect my network. Here are the (current) specs:

FreeNAS #1

Supermicro SC846E1-R900B Chassis

Supermicro X10SRL-F

Intel Xeon E5-1620

32GB DDR4 Samsung ECC/REG RAM

Supermicro 4U Active CPU Cooler SNK-P0050AP4

17x Western Digital 2TB Red HDD

LSI 9211-8i HBA

2x 16GB Sandisk Cruzer Fit (for mirrored boot)

FreeNAS#2

Supermicro SC828TQ-R1200LPB Chassis

Motherboard Unknown

CPU Unknown

RAM Unknown

8x Western Digital 3TB SE HDD

LSI 9211-8i HBA

2x 16GB Sandisk Cruzer Fit (for mirrored boot)

Pfsense

1U rackmount chassis

Intel DH61DL

Intel i3-2120

4GB G.Skill DDR3

Dynatron K2 1U CPU Cooler

HP NC364T PCIe 4Pt Gigabit NIC

All of this will be connected with a TP-LINK TL-SG1016 switch and protected by 1 or 2 Powerware 9130 UPS. While I will be recycling some hardware from my current builds, the rest is in route from Amazon and Ebay and should arrive in the next 1-2 weeks. On with the work!

First thing is first, we need somewhere to put these new servers and for that, I picked up a Standard 19″ 22U rack.

And it fits quite nicely inside my office. (for now)

Next item to arrive was my PDU which I quickly installed in the back of the rack.

As items arrive I will be sure to publish an update but until then…

Cheers till next time,
